The Nutcracker – One Earth – Pop-Up Christmas Shop

There’s something for everyone at the new Christmas pop-up shop at 4573 Marine Avenue (next to Fits to a T). The combined efforts of local businesswomen, Elaine Steiger and Christine Konopelski, have produced The Nutcracker – with homemade jams and jellies, baskets, nuts and fruits and One Earth – featuring goods from ports as far away as Peru and Morocco.

Unique gift baskets, gourmet foods not normally found in Powell River and other great gift ideas await shoppers. “You won’t be disappointed,” Elaine said. “We have jams and jellies, imported treats, cheeses, cakes and candies. Or, take a look at One Earth’s silk scarves, placemats, tea cozies and Moroccan leather bags. Everything is reasonably priced so”

imageThe various nutcrackers found throughout the pop-up shop are from Elaine’s personal collection. This one came from Austria or Germany and is more than 50 years old.

The NutcrackerOne Earth shop has baskets for every occasion. “There’s one for a baby, shaped like a diaper cake, there’s animal themed baskets, some filled with delicacies and everything for the cook, there’s even a “towel” cake made of colourful coiled facecloths and towels, it’s quite beautiful.”

imageLet Christine, owner and manager of One Earth, teach you another way to tie your scarf. With a deft twist, she can make your scarf lay flat instead of bunching up under your chin. What a great winter trick to learn. Check out that Moroccan leather bag!

Just around the corner from The Nutcracker and rows of baskets and preserves you’ll find One Earth – stocked with gifts from around the world. Moroccan leather purses, jewellery, Moroccan clay black soap, argan oil, tea trays, slippers and kitchen accessories – placemats, tea cozies, coffee presses and more. “All of these goods are made in home based businesses in other countries,” she said. “The founder of this company, One Earth, travels to places in South America and Asia and teaches people how to start and maintain their own small business. Their goods are exported to shops like mine, another home-based business.”

Drop in and visit with Elaine, Christine and their assistant Debbie. The NutcrackerOne Earth pop-up shop is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. While you browse amongst the merchandise you can keep an eye open for Fritz, the store mascot. He’s a friendly little elf named after the little boy in the ballet, The Nutcracker. “You may spot him hiding on a shelf,” Elaine said. “If you find him, you’ll get a chance at a door prize and a wee Christmas treat. We hope to see you soon.”
