The Green Hearts – Powell River’s Green Heart Environmental Protection Foundation, met with PRSC and Island Timberlands last week in what Green Hearts organizer Jenny Garden describes as “a productive meeting.”
The purpose of the meeting was to present a request to PRSC (Powell River/Sliammon) and Island Timberlands, Jenny said.
“Our intention was to sign a written acknowledgement with them stating that in good faith, negotiations will proceed and that everyone agrees to a no-cut period of four to six months,” she said.
It is expected that fund raising initiatives will be put in place during this grace period to purchase as much of the land or trees in question as possible. At stake is a wooded area in the heart of the Powell River community. It is under threat of being clear cut by Island Timberlands, a logging company that holds timber harvesting rights to the property.
Island Timberlands has a timber reservation agreement to harvest timber on two properties within Lot 450 owned by PRSC Land Developments Ltd. (Powell River and Sliammon). These lands stretch from the ocean’s edge into the mountains behind Powell River and are a key wildlife corridor.
There will be general Green Heart meeting soon for those who want to know more and how they can help. Stay tuned, and check out The Green Heart Environmental Protection Foundation’s FB page.
