If a tree falls in the forest – does anybody hear?

Rain forest
Mist and mystery
Teeming green
Green brain facing lobotomy
Climate control centre for the world
Ancient cord of coexistence
Hacked by parasitic greedhead scam –
From Sarawak to Amazonas
Costa Rica to many BC hills –
Cortege rhythm of falling timber

What kind of currency grows in these new deserts
These brand new flood plains?

If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?

Bruce Cockburn – If A Tree Falls – 7 April 1988 – Toronto – Canada

While taking a walk on a well-used trail over the weekend, a group of hikers came across this scene: a large fir tree recently felled, with both ends laying intact and the centre piece missing.

A ring from the tree’s base was left at the site showing the tree was more than 60 years old. The tree was taken from the side of an old logging road on Dayton Road, off Duck Lake Road.

Whoever felled the tree, and took away a truck load of wood also left behind their garbage -a coffee cup and two pizza boxes.

To report illegal harvesting of trees, call the Ministry of Forests at 604-485-0700, or http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/cos/rapp/help.html.

  1. Norma says:

Pretty sure even CSI would say such evidence is circumstantial at best. When I mushroom pick I find all sorts of take out and coffee containers all over the bush, and when I go several days in a row they tend to get scattered about, more appear, and some even vanish. So–just because the pizza boxes are there doesn’t really say the people who cut this tree down left them. It seems likely, but it is not proof of anything. I would suggest people be very careful about accusing anyone of anything based on such “evidence.”

  2. One personal sized pizza and one medium sized pizza, just to be exact. I am not the only person who came upon this felled tree, word is out, we will find out who did this.

  3. We live in a province with a declining forest base upon which to base our collective future, and with a rich and ongoing history of forest mismanagement.
There are not many details to go on from the photos. But assuming DBH of ~two feet (and typical Douglas Fir growth form after 60 years = about 70-80 feet), these thieves stole a wee bit less than 1 stacked cord of firewood (~3.2 cubic metres). From you…and me. If said wood were milled locally as lumber, it would be worth considerably more. To you…and me.
Perhaps it’s just me having watched too many episodes of CSI, but did the pizza boxes contain a “to-be-picked by” receipt including a phone number? We live in a small town…there can’t of been that many batches of two medium pizzas sold at lunchtime on that particular day…and I would like to see these people caught, and tasked with planting trees for a couple of days. For you…and me.
