Powell River Library is hosting two events on May 2nd, with Pushcart Poetry nominee Kevin Spenst – author of Ignite, Jabbering with Bing Bong and over a dozen chapbooks.
At 2 pm, Spenst will read from his newest book of poetry, Ignite (Anvil Press, 2016), said Sonia Zagwyn, Teen Services Coordinator at Powell River Library. Ignite is Spenst’s personal collection and engages in the topics of schizophrenia and mental illness. Spenst is an advocate for people who have grown up around both.
What’s a chapbook? “At 7 pm you can find out by making one of your own,” Sonia said. Kevin Spenst has made chapbooks out of air sickness bags, beer coasters, repurposed brochures and magazines, and sometimes just good old-fashioned paper. He has five chapbooks of poetry with publishers across Canada and will lead a workshop in the art of chapbook making.
“Participants will create new poetry through a number of prompts,” said Sonia. “Take a look at various editing strategies for refining your work, and conclude by making a unique chapbook for one of your poems.”
Registration is required and class size is limited to 15, so call the Library at 604-485-8663,to reserve a spot asap.
