Powell River Public Library is hosting two events at the Library on May 2nd with Pushcart Poetry nominee Kevin Spenst – author of Ignite, Jabbering with Bing Bong, and over a dozen chapbooks. At 2:00 pm, Spenst will read from his newest book of poetry, Ignite (Anvil Press, 2016), a personal collection that engages in the topics of schizophrenia and mental illness. Spenst is an advocate for people who have grown up around both.
What’s a chapbook? At 7:00 pm you can find out by making one of your own. Kevin Spenst has made chapbooks out of air sickness bags, beer coasters, re-purposed brochures and magazines, and sometimes just good old-fashioned paper. He has five chapbooks of poetry with publishers across Canada and will lead a workshop in the art of chapbook making. You’ll create new poetry through a number of prompts, look at various editing strategies for refining your work, and conclude by making a unique chapbook for one of your poems. Registration is required and class size is limited to 15, so call the Library at 604-485-4796 to reserve a spot asap!
