Powell River Man Electrocuted Climbing Hydro Tower

On Friday, June 10th at approximately 8:00 pm the Powell River RCMP attended a Hydro line off of Duck Lake Road near Powell River, BC due to information received that one of two young men climbing one of the hydro towers was electrocuted.  One of the young males was able to place a 911 call, and hold his friend in place preventing him from falling.

Police, Powell River and Malaspina Fire departments, EHS BC Hydro and Powell River Search and Rescue all attended to assist with the rescue of the male.  Eventually the tower was grounded by Hydro Crews in consultation with Brookfield Energy employees.  Search and Rescue along with Fire were then able to climb the tower, place harnesses on the males, and lower them to the ground.  Both males ages 17 and 18, and residents of Powell River, were taken from the site by ambulance to two awaiting Air Ambulances, and flown to Vancouver General Hospital.

One of the males was released the following day with severe burns to his hands, while the other male remains in hospital in critical condition, with severe burns to his upper torso.

The families of the young males would like to thank all those that assisted in the rescue.
