Feeding Families and Building Community

Get ready Powell River, they’re almost here….

The BC Farmers Market Nutrition Coupon Program is launching in 47 communities across BC this June, and Powell River is in!

This innovative, helpful program provides lower-income families and seniors who are enrolled in cooking and skill-building programs with coupons each week to spend at their local Farmers Markets. Participants can use the coupons to purchase eligible products including fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, cheese, eggs and fresh cut herbs. Participants then learn how to cook healthy, nutritious meals using locally procured farm products.

So far the program has been received with open arms. Here’s a sampling of some flavourful comments:

“Parents express surprise when their children devour a green salad including over wintered and unfamiliar greens like kale, arugula, and endive gleaned from the Family Place garden,” said a spokesperson from PR Family Place.

“Two mothers in the pregnancy outreach program started crying because they were so happy to be able to feed their kids fresh fruit and vegetables. One other participant said they had never seen or eaten Swiss chard and we were able to give her a recipe so she would know how to prepare it,” said a spokesperson from the Caribou Family Enrichment Centre.

“Lots of moms and elders were amazed how fast and big our community garden grows and how cost saving our garden vegetables are towards their families,” said a spokesperson from Sechelt Indian Band.

The Nutrition Coupon Program starts this week at Powell River’s Open Air – Farmers Market and vendors are getting ready to welcome the new shoppers.

The Open Air Market is held Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and on Sundays from 12:30 – 2:30 pm. See you there!
